
Willie Fleming
One of seven children and the first in his family to attend college, Willie Fleming attended Shelbyville Junior High School and Lincoln Institute where he was a class of 1947 valedictorian. He attended Fisk University in Tennessee where he graduated with honors, earning a degree in business administration and a minor in history. In 1951 Fleming, along with Alfred Calloway, were the first African-Americans to attend the University Of Louisville School Of Law. He graduated in 1954 with a law degree and in 1955 he passed the Kentucky Bar Exam. Fleming was among several local African-American leaders who helped fully integrate the city swimming pool in the early 1960s. He was also the first local African-American to develop a subdivision, Monica Gardens, named after his oldest daughter, Monica.
