
Shelbyville High School’s Kentucky State High School Basketball Tournament team (1956)
The 1956 Shelbyville Red Devils won the 8th Region title in 1956, and lost to Wayland and “King” Kelly in the opening round of the Kentucky State High School Basketball Tournament. Kelly scored 50 points, while Devils’ ace Herbie Kays countered with 26. Coach Evan Settle frequently called Kays the most outstanding player who ever played for him.
In the front row are; Kays, Bobby Swindler, “Shug” Hickman, Bill Clements, and Donny Swigert.
Back row, Sammy West, Bobby Carter, Lewis Mathis Jr., Jess Frazier, Chester Ethington, Bill Frye, Bobby Joe Wright, and Coach Settle.
