Daisy Saffell
Daisy Saffell, the first wife of George Saffell, became the first African-American woman in Kentucky to obtain her embalmer’s and undertaker’s licenses. The Saffells opened a funeral home in 1909 at the corner of 9th and Clay Streets and, at that time, this was the only funeral home where African-Americans could hold a wake for their loved ones. She had a local hospital on 10th Street named after her. She died in 1918.
