Jack Green
Shelbyville High School’s most famous athlete Jack Green blocked a punt as the Red Devils upset Lexington Henry Clay, 14-7, in the 1941 Tobacco Festival game. Later, he would captain the unbeaten national champion Army teams of 1944 and 1945 and be elected to college football’s Hall of Fame. He was named head coach at Vanderbilt University in 1963 and served as assistant coach at Kansas and Baylor. He died in 1981. He was one of 10 children of D. L. and May Green, for whom a new bridge was dedicated on the Eminence Pike in 2005.
