
Dennis “Dan” Lawrence McGann
Photo of Dennis “Dan” Lawrence McGann. Dead-ball era first baseman Dan “Cap” McGann was born in Shelbyville in 1871, and is the only Shelby County native to play in baseball’s World Series, captaining the New York Giants in the 1905 classic. In his big league career, McGann batted .285 while playing for five different teams. He broke in with Boston in 1896, then played for Baltimore and St. Louis before joining the Giants from 1903 to 1907. He finished with Boston in 1908. He died in Louisville in 1910 at the age of 39.
