About The Events

Visit Wakefield-Scearce Galleries for the holidays and meet some of the 25 authors who have contributed to the Shelby County Historical Society’s latest publication, Legacy of Refinement: Science Hill Female Academy, Science Hill Inn, Wakefield-Scearce Galleries. Historical Society volunteers will also assist us in selling this special magazine devoted to the teachers, students, programs, events, academic education, and the era of Science Hill’s reign. Preserved today through Wakefield-Scearce Galleries, this is the best place to get your copy before they are all gone! Witness the venue where it all took place and walk in the students footsteps. Begun in 1825 by Julia Tevis, this historical landmark makes the perfect place to get your copy of the magazine.

The magazine contains over 30 articles, each one giving a glimpse of Science Hill from a different angle. You’ll want to buy a copy of the magazine for yourself and one to give as a gift! Authors include: Matt Burnett, Bobbie Bryant, Jack Brammer, Trace Kirkwood, Sarahbeth Farabee, John David Myles, Heather Cecil, Bill Ellis, Cheryl Van Stockum, Betsy Hatfield, Bonnie Burks Gray, Austin Conley, Brian Cushing, Hannah Costelle (Filson Historical Society Staff), Maureen Lane (Filson Historical Society Staff), Hugh H. Harris, Jerry Miller, Kerry Magan, Sheri Murphy Smith, Martha O’Nan, Sarah Elizabeth Wilson, Cyndi Powell Chaney, Darlene Snow, and Helen McKinney, with a forward by William Burnett.

Legacy of Refinement: Science Hill Female Academy, Science Hill Inn, Wakefield-Scearce Galleries is $20 (tax included). Your purchase contributes to the Shelby County Historical Societies’ goal to preserve and promote Shelby County and Kentucky history.
