Gray family: Whitie’s given name is William Preston and Blackie’s Adriel Clark (after two prominent Shelby County physicians Dr. William Preston Hughes and Dr. Adriel Clark Weakley). An engineer, Samuel Gray helped convert the Climax Roller Mills from steam to diesel, and Our Best Mill in Smithfield from steam to electricity. Blackie and Whitie were three years old when their father died.
