
Harvard Astronomical expedition (1869)
Members of the Harvard Astronomical expedition came to Shelby College to observe the solar eclipse of August 7, 1869. Identified individuals include: 1. Dr. Otho Miller. 2. Capt. W. C. Winlock. 3. Miss Eliza Winlock. 4. Mrs. Belle Winlock (of Cambridge, Massachusetts), 5. Dr. R. F. Logan, 6. Miss Anna Powell. 7. Capt. Marion Taylor (who served with the Union during the Civil War), 8. Frank Adams, St. Louis, MO., 9. John Tate. 10. Honorable James S. Morris, 11. R. C. Tevis. 12. Prof. Joseph Winlock Cambridge), 13. Ed. D. Shinnick. 14. George A. Armstrong 15. Prof. Ray Pierce (Cambridge), 16. Samuel Wayne. and 17. The servant and cook in the family of Judge Fielding Winlock of Shelbyville. The four children seated on the ground between No. 3 and No. 7 and the rear of No. 9 are the children of Prof. Joseph Winlock of Cambridge. 18. Daniel Baker.
