President Harry S. Truman’s Shelbyville “whistle stop”
President Harry S. Truman, Democrat, spoke to a large crowd of Shelby Countians during his “whistle stop” train trip across America in the summer and fall of 1948. He was introduced by County Judge Coleman Wright. Hundreds of Shelby County school children were bussed to the L & N train station at North 8th Street to hear the man who would go on to defeat Republican Thomas E. Dewey in the November election.
