Field Trip

Field Trips & Educational Programs

Want your students to know more about local history? We love creating programs and sharing our knowledge of Shelby County and its past. We can structure a field trip program to fit your curriculum and STEM needs, help Scouts earn merit badges, etc., if we do not already have one in place. We can supplement programs with museum tours and highlight artifacts, draw in re-enactors and those who give first-person portrayals of people from our past, and offer special activities such as a downtown walking tour to showcase our unique history to make the program extra special and memorable. To accommodate larger groups, we may ask your group to break into smaller ones and rotate through several stations on the day of your visit. Public school students, homeschoolers, and educational organizations welcome!

History in a Trunk

Can’t come to us? We make classroom visits with our History in a Trunk Program for elementary-aged students. We can arrange to visit your classroom with our trunk full of special artifacts for a great hands-on Show and Tell program, complete with a classroom activity. We can format a program to fit your teaching needs, complete with Shelby County artifacts from our collection. Just give us an idea of what theme or time period you are studying or want to more about and we will create the perfect trunk full of history to visually supplement your curriculum. We’ll teach your students how to unlock the treasures to our shared history.

Our facility, located at 627 Main Street in Shelbyville, has two floors, is handicap accessible, contains bathrooms, and has parking on Main Street and a city lot behind our building. Weather permitting and depending on group size, we may be able to offer outside and inside stations.

Field trips are generally offered during operating hours, Wednesday – Friday, but can be scheduled on Monday and Tuesday as needed. You must contact us to schedule a visit. We ask that, if possible, you know when booking the field trip if transportation (buses) is available for the expected field trip date. Please provide chaperones.

Special tours and programs can be arranged by phone at (502) 513-5555 or online
