Merriam Webster defines an artifact as: an object made by humans and surviving from an earlier time period. The Shelby County Historical Society loves nothing better than a good artifact! Many people wonder just what type of items the society has in its accessions collection, so we have decided to show off a few of them. On Thursday, November 14th at 6:30 pm, the Shelby County Historical Society will be collaborating with the Shelby County Public Library for Artifacts That Connect Us to the Past. This program will be held in the Carnegie Library Center located at 731 College St., Shelbyville, KY.
To different people, an artifact has different meanings. Artifacts come in different shapes and sizes - a store ledger, school commencement program, pottery, photographs, a land deed, arrowheads – all items created by someone for a specific use. The items can connect us in many ways – regionally, socially, culturally, and the list goes on. If we consider an artifact as something that people once owned and used, we can discover interesting things about a variety of people and places, creating a web of relationships. Artifacts, in other words, are the tangible source that makes history real.
The Shelby County Historical Society strives to look closely at artifacts, put them into historical context, and use them to understand the past in an effort to accomplish our goal of preserving and promoting the knowledge and appreciation of Shelby County and Kentucky history
Join us for this program that takes a fascinating look at artifacts preserved before the “digital age” that we are all a part of now.
