The cornerstone was laid on June 11, 1913, containing all of the relics housed in the previous courthouse’s cornerstone along with pictures of Shelbyville street-scenes and newspapers from that era. The cost to build was $120,000, and unlike the previous courthouse, the new building would have all of the modern amenities, such as central heating, plumbing, and electricity. The courthouse was designed by the firm of Joseph and Joseph Architects of Louisville. Although the firm had only been in business for around five years, Alfred Joseph also happened to be the brother-in-law of Shelbyville’s Mayor, Leon Rothchild, and the Joseph brothers were awarded this grand project. As a testament to their timeless designs, the firm is still thriving today. Some of their more recent works include the Waterfront Condominium highrise in downtown Louisville, the restoration of Angel’s Envy Distillery across from Slugger Field, and the Parklands of Floyd’s Fork in eastern Jefferson County.

Shelby County Fiscal Courthouse Our old courthouse is truly an architectural work of art.
